Message Detonation is typically caused by a couple of things:

1). Too much heat
2). Not enough octane
3). Not enough fuel
4). Too much compression

You could have the coolest intake charge, great octane, and tons of fuel, but if your compression is too high the car WILL detonate.

Obviously, higher compression spools the turbos more quickly and the low end feels better, but the higher static compression up top will limit the amount of boost you can run and therefore the amount of power you can make. Turbo cars make power with efficient boost, not with high compression.

Let's take your example a step further and instead of getting a 9:1 piston, you get an 11:1 piston. How much boost do you think you will be able to run? Very, very little even with an intercooler and race fuel. Certainly, your low end would feel much more improved but your top end would be very much limited by the cars static compression.

Personally, I would take 8:0 to 1 WAY before I took 9:0 to 1. I would more than make up for the loss of low end grunt and quicker spooling of the turbos by running 8 more psi of boost.

Ultimately, if your goal is to make tons of power, you would regret running the higher compression piston.

JE makes an 8.5:1 piston; get that bad boy!
